The City of Charlestown's Small Business Economic Relief program was made possible through a grant award from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs. The Charlestown Mayor's Office, consultants with the Weatley Group, and the Charlestown Redevelopment Commission worked together to pursue the funding, develop and oversee the program - and in two phases provided substantial awards to 34 local businesses for a grand total of $250,000 in capital to help sustain small business in Charlestown during the COVID-19 crisis.
Charlestown received over 40 applications from businesses wishing to participate in the program, and is no longer accepting applications, as all of the funds have been obligated - though the city will continue to aggressively pursue any future grants or programs to benefit the local small business community as the Pandemic continues.
"I'm grateful to the selection committee and Redevelopment Commission for approving these grants. Our small business owners make up the backbone of our community and they have suffered great economic hardship in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic," said Mayor Treva Hodges regarding the program.
"These grants will help them keep their doors open and, I hope, will help ease the strain a little. These businesses support our community, they donate to our little league, sponsor local events like Founder's Day, and are often the first to give to local charitable organizations - its great to be able to give back to them for a change, and show them how much we value their service to our city."
